It’s March- against the majors

6 Mar

Nuts triggered an unexpected reaction in me the other day while grocery shopping.

I didn’t get a rash, or experience difficulty breathing, instead the choice of nuts have prompted a change in my shopping habits… for a month anyway and we’ll see how it goes.

The other day, while getting some groceries from the fresh food people- a decision over nuts proved challenging.

All I wanted was cashews.

On principal, my significant other and I don’t like to buy the ‘fresh food people’s’ home brand products.

Nothing against these people, we have the same stance on the products produced by the ‘down-down’ people and other home brands.

I think the more we opt for these products, the more of a strangle hold these companies get over what is on our shelves and eventually we could have no choice.

The thing is, of the five cashew options available on this day- about four were different versions of home brands.

The remaining one packet of cashews was about double the price of the rest.

Supermarkets make plenty of money out of being supermarkets; I don’t think there is any need to help them monopolise the grocery market.

So for the next four weeks we will avoid the ‘fresh food people’ and the ‘down-down’ people.

That might not sound so difficult (and I’m hoping it’s not) but we usually end up at one of these places out of convenience.

It’s just easier to go in and grab all the things you want, not having to run all over the place.

It’s also nice when the big buying power reduces the amount we have to pay.

Then again, the experience of shopping at specialty stores can be kind of nice.

We already buy most of our meat from our local butcher and we have a whole foods store nearby where we can get most of what we need.

I’m also lucky that my office is just a block away from some great markets, where I can buy produce on Fridays.

While I’m not about to commit to a 100 per cent to raw diet, hopefully the reduced exposure to heavily processed foods might also help us be a little healthier.
